Several studies have shown that biodiesel production has almost no impact on food prices. There is, however, a link between the oil price and agricultural products in general. Due to the use of mineral oil as fuel for tractors and the production of fertilizers, part of the price of beans and seeds is determined by the fossil oil price. During the 2008 price peak, the prices of all agricultural products rose, including those not used for the production of biofuels, such as rice.
Meanwhile, the production of biofuels in the EU has increased and food prices have fallen worldwide. Since 2008, EU biofuel production has increased by 68%, while global food prices have fallen by 20%. The European Commission confirms that EU biofuels policy has not led to negative effects on food prices.
