Scientists have shown that global warming is largely caused by increasing amounts of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 in the air. As the temperature on Earth rises, the climate is changing. Global warming slows as global greenhouse gas emissions fall. The use of renewable energy in the transport sector, for example in the form of biofuels, leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Renewable energy
The Dutch government wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49% in 2030 compared to 1990. The use of energy from renewable sources, also known as ‘renewable energy’, is an important part of the package of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Global warming is best tackled when countries work together. That is why measures are often taken together with the other EU Member States. The Netherlands, together with almost all countries in the world, has committed itself to the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015. The climate treaty gives direction to EU policy, which lays the foundation for the climate policy in the Netherlands.
